What is CGC Group? Co-operative Grocer Chain

Throughout Japan, you can find supermarkets which carry high quality foods in a variety of categories, from fresh and chilled daily necessities to dry groceries. Many of these stores are CGC JAPAN affiliated member supermarkets.

CGC signage (shown below) appears at the entrance of such stores, along with large stacks of cases of CGC branded products on promotion, and a full range of CGC brand products on the shelves. At the same time, you can see beautiful posters and banners featuring CGC products along walls and windows, and will hear the rhythmical music that is also provided by CGC Japan.

CGC Group is a cooperative of CGC JAPAN and its affiliated members. We are all working together to accomplish a common goal, and affiliated members exchange their ideas and experiences with each other. Every month, we have a meeting at which the top management of member companies participate to foster communication between CGC JAPAN and its members. At this meeting, CGC JAPAN explains monthly initiatives and exchanges information with member companies. Consequently, CGC JAPAN is able to understand its members' needs, and as a result, utilize members' opinions to improve merchandising and other activities. We also hold merchandising meetings for various products and services at which category managers of each member company participate, allowing them not only to acquire the newest information on CGC products and promotions, but also to have opportunities to touch, taste and evaluate new products directly.

The History of CGC GROUP

In the midst of the Oil Crisis of 1973, Japanese supermarkets were faced with a sudden shortage of daily necessities, which led to sky-rocketing price hikes and inflation thereafter. At that time, numerous supermarket operators felt a strong need to secure nation-wide buying power, in order to offer customers stable and adequate supplies of quality merchandise at reasonable prices. They banded together to form CGC JAPAN under the leadership of "Supermarket Santoku" in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Through 30 years of commitment, CGC Japan has kept pace with the growth of the supermarket industry, and now CGC affiliated members include over 200 companies which operate around 3000 supermarkets all over Japan.
